4 Proven Ways to Keep Heating Costs Down This Winter

When temperatures start dipping, you might worry about the cost of heating your Hampton, Pennsylvania, home. Luckily, there are four steps you can take to lower your heating costs this winter without breaking the bank.

Upgrade Your Thermostat

Setting your thermostat back 7–10 degrees for at least eight hours a day can save you up to 10 percent on your heating and cooling bill. When you’re not at home, lower your home’s temperature with either a programmable or smart thermostat. A programmable thermostat allows you to customize your heating schedule to save money, while a smart thermostat lets you change the temperature from anywhere with your smartphone.

Seal Your Windows and Doors

You don’t want cold air entering your home and warm air leaving through drafts around your windows and doors. To determine if you need these spots fixed, place a dollar bill between the door or window, then seal and close it. If you can easily remove the money, it’s best to replace the seal or install weather stripping.

Replace Your Furnace Filter

A dirty filter means that your HVAC system has to work harder and longer because less warm air is spreading throughout your home. A new filter will minimize air obstruction while eliminating the dust and air particles you don’t want to breathe in.

Use Your Ceiling Fans

You might think that turning on your ceiling fan defeats the purpose of warming your home, but if you reverse the fan’s direction, it can help warm the space. In warm weather, you want the fan to rotate counterclockwise, but in the winter, reverse the direction to clockwise and turn it to a low speed. This motion will create an updraft and push the warm air down toward your living space.

Don’t let winter’s cold temperatures drastically increase your heating bills. Utilize these steps to keep your heating costs down. You can also contact Titan HVAC Inc. at (412) 424-6794 to make sure your HVAC unit is operating to the best of its ability.
